School History

Lavender Hill High, a government school on the “Cape Flats”, is located in one of the most economically and culturally deprived areas of the Western Cape. The school currently has 33 educators, 2 admin and 3 estate staff members employed by the WCED. In addition to this, the school employs a further 10 full-time and part-time employees to assist with various tasks/duties: security, cleaning and maintenance, feeding scheme and extra-mural activities.
The school was established in 1978 with a staff of 24 members and about 500 learners. The various principals have been as follows:

  • Mr William Langenhoven (1978- 1985)
  • Mr Yusuf Abrahams (1986 – 1990)
  • Mr Jan Pikaan (1991 – 1996)
  • Mr Abel Abel Appel (1997 – 2001)
  •  Mr Faseeg Manie (2002 – )

Since the inception of the school, it has faced many obstacles and challenges. Many of the problems in the community such as substance abuse and gang violence are the result of the high levels of social dysfunction in the community. To overcome the adverse effects of the learners’ challenging socio-economic circumstances the school has various programmes to assist learners in transcending the limitations of the structural effects of poverty. In spite of the many obstacles faced by the school, it has much to celebrate. Briefly these are:

  • the school’s ever-improving matric pass rate(consistently higher than both the provincial and national averages); it has improved from 58.1% in 2005 to 84% in 2015
  • a sharp decline in learner dropouts (by 29%) over the last five years
  •  a dramatic increase in learner enrolment (848 learners in 2003 versus 987 this year); the daily feeding scheme for 250 learners
  • a vibrant extra-mural programme involving more than 200 learners
  • the Youth Empowerment through School (Y.E.S) project which has as its aim social mindset change
  •  a major improvement in infrastructure (3 computer labs, ‘smart school’, two playing-fields, library, gym, brand new bullet-deflective fence, school hall, Orsmond Hall)
